SPEAKERS
Dr. Norm Evans
Growing up in rural Kentucky on a working farm and active in 4-H projects, Norm Evans followed a boyhood desire to become a veterinarian. In 1968 he graduated from Auburn University and returned home to join an established practice. Soon, that practice led him to Madisonville, Ky. Treating both small and large animals, he was predominantly a large animal practitioner.
Eventually, it was time to learn about “exotics”. There, in the same barn where he had done embryo transfer on cattle, he was called in to try to discover why crias were so weak that they could not stand. Wrapping and unwrapping the legs with splints and attempting to straighten the legs was failing. Finally, taking what had worked for him in his own herd of cattle, he tried nutritional changes. He began to see a gradual improvement in the overall health- until one very long summer when everything went wrong again. Thank goodness for a state veterinary lab less than an hour away. In a few hours the lab faxed the results, and he changed the treatment. Finally, one of the technicians recognized that she was seeing something that resembled EPI in other species. These two experiences were never forgotten.
Nutrition and the value of blood tests became ingrained in the veterinarian who began treating llamas not as “exotics” but with the applications of standard veterinary medicine. Later came the importation of the alpacas and a chance to work with several hundred stationed in Lexington, KY on a former horse farm. The value of IgGs and the lessons he learned from ultrasounds on that many animals, then following them later as they dispersed all over the country have greatly affected his views on nutrition and reproduction. Norm Evans’ primary interest now involves breeding management utilizing the skin biopsy, nutrition and fiber analysis to maximize the alpaca’s genetic potential.
David Barboza, AOBA and IAJS Alpaca Judge
David Barboza, while volunteering as a ring steward, recognized the process and challenges that livestock judging presented and decided to attend the International Alpaca Judging School in 2001. After returning from training in Peru he began the AOBA judges training program and completed his certification in both IAJS and AOBA as a halter, fleece and performance judge. He judged his first show in 2006 and has judged over 30 shows both in the US and Canada. David now works full-time in the Alpaca Industry dividing his time between his ranch, judging and teaching seminars. In 2006 together with his wife Brenda they started ACE, Alpaca Continuing Education?, which provides cutting edge training and education for the Alpaca breeder. Today David and Brenda run their ranch, RanchoNC Alpacas, in the foothills of Northern California and devote their full-time attention to the Alpaca Industry.
Dr. Brett Kaysen, CSU Dept. of Animal Sciences
Brett Kaysen has been an influence in the Alpaca Community on many levels since 2001. In 2006 Brett joined ACE and brought his professional animal science background to the alpaca livestock industry. He travels coast-to-coast teaching seminars on alpacas consisting of classroom presentations as well as “hands-on” workshops. Brett also holds an instrumental position with the AOBA Judges Training Program where he teaches Oral Reasons and Conformation. Brett has a passion for educating, especially in the area of youth education. He has taught the nation’s youth about various livestock industries and has spent countless hours volunteering to educate youngsters involved in 4H programs nationwide.
Brett was raised east of Brighton, Colorado where he has always been involved with every aspect of raising livestock. He earned a Bachelors degree in Animal Science from Colorado State University in 1997. Brett continued his education at CSU earning a Masters degree in Cooperative Extension and Education in 2003 and most recently, a Ph.D. in Management Systems. Brett currently holds a faculty position with CSU in the Department of Animal Sciences.

Since we started our alpaca farm in 2000, we have learned a few things along the way, and we always have time to share our experiences with our visitors.
We are conveniently located near Interstate 35 just southwest of Kansas City. Honey Creek Farm is home to beautiful registered huacaya alpacas. An array of colors from white to black can be seen grazing peacefully on our 14 acres of prairie grassland.
Our alpacas come from a diverse selection of herdsires from all four corners of the United States, as well as the midwest. We believe that diversity of bloodlines makes a stronger herd, and have chosen carefully for color uniformity. Grandsires include Hemingway, Caligula, Matador, Bueno, Elever, Royal Fawn, Camelot, Legacy, Snowmaster, Guellermo, Black Magic, Black Epic, to name a few.
We are a full service farm providing financing, boarding, and breeding. Discounts are available on some multiple purchases. Ask about our customer discounts.
Pete sits on the Board of Directors of the charitable Mid-America Alpaca Foundation, and Sonda currently serves as President of the not-for-profit Mid-America Alpaca Show, Inc.

Pen Sale Buyers Tips
· Buying at a pen sale is just like buying off the farm. You have all the same guarantees and after sale support plus you have a better selection and better pricing.
· Sales are private treaty. This means you are free to negotiate. If you see something you like but feel it is priced just a bit higher than you wanted to pay, make an offer. Some prices will be firm and others will be flexible. If a breeder has other alpacas of that same bloodline they may be willing to negotiate or work with you in creative ways. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
· Have Goals. Come prepared with a list of alpacas you would like to evaluate and get your hands on early.
· Use the experts onhand, David Braboza and Brett Kaysen. There is no perfect alpaca and the experts are here to point out both strengths and weaknesses to help guide your future breeding decisions.
· Don’t miss out. Sales will take place throughout the day. If you see an alpaca online that you may be interested in, do your homework and call for more information before the sale. That way you can be sure to make your decision before someone else does.
