2008 Neonatal Clinic

November 15, 2008

Dos Doñas is proud to offer our third Neonatal Seminar and Lab. Over the years, we have tried to bring in a variety of different speakers and this year we are excited to have two nationally recognized experts presenting.

Dr. Norm Evans is well known in the camelid community for his work in nutrition, reproduction and most recently, his focus on maximizing the genetic potential of fiber production. Dr. Evans wil present at the seminar portion and optonal ultrasound lab.

Dr. Doug Pernikoff is a former zoo veterinaran who is well known among the zoo and conservation communities. He is frequently the only vet in town willing to take on unique and even dangerous species. His interests are varied and he is especially skilled in surgery and emergency situations. Dr. Pernikoff will lead the hands on dystocia lab group.

This information will be geared to both owners and their veterinarians. We will end the day with a bonfire, drinks, dinner and fireside chat.

Wet Lab:

The afternoon will consist of one or two different lab sessions, depending on demand.

One section will be led by Dr. Doug Pernikoff, a former zoo veterinarian and our local vet, who has great deal of expertise successfully dealing with dystocias and C-Secions- both in the clinic and in the field. Dr. Doug will lead participants through several different dystocia scenarios breeders are likely to encounter. Participants will have plenty of hands on time with the artificial uterus and donated fetuses. By the end, you will be able to blindly reach in through the artificial pelvis, explain what you are feeling, manually correct several different malpositions and succssfully "deliver" the cria.

If there are several veterinarians in attendance, we will offer a second lab section, led by Dr. Evans. This group will meet in the barn were he will demonstrate both male and female breeding soundness exams, rectal and transabdominal ultrasounds, IP Plasma Transfer techniques, blood draw techniques, and IgG testing. Breeders and their veterinarians will be able to rotate through both sessions.

Time and Location:

The seminar, wet lab and bonfire will be held at our farm in Forissant, Missouri. Directions will be sent to attendees prior to their arrival. The morning will begin at 8AM. The education protion of the day is expected to wrap up between 4-5PM with the bonfire immediately to follow.
