Requirements of all Incoming Alpacas

Here at Dos Doñas Alpaca Farm, we are becoming increasingly aware of issues which often arise as a result of the frequent movement of alpacas across the country. Shows are becoming larger and more frequent. Many owners are seeking new genetics and alpacas are being transported across the country for sales and stud services.

Over the past several years, we have become concerned with the number of females who arrive here for breeding or to be sold on consignment who are often in poor body condition. More often than not, these same girls have parasites or other infections, which must be addressed before they can leave quarantine and enter the breeding program. We have worked closely with our veterinarians to come up with a list of requirements which must be met before any new alpacas arrive on the farm. We will email you a form for your veterinarian to fill out and fax to us before your alpacas are shipped here. There are three key items on that form:

1) All alpacas must test BVD negative by PCR or V.

2) All alpacas must have a minimum body score of 4.5 out of 10.

3) All incoming alpacas must test negative for parasites. Your veterinarian must follow our fecal protocol and use a super saturated sugar solution.

Alpacas are livestock and illness can happen but because these procedures will be followed by all, your alpacas will enjoy added protection from incoming illnesses and parasitism which may be brought in by new arrivals. These requirements may seem cumbersome but are intended to minimize risk to other alpacas residing on the farm, including yours.
