Fly Girl

DD Kuma’s Fly Girl – National Brown Color Champ!

ARI #: 31757737
Color: Dark Brown
Suggested Service Sire: Bronze Mahogany
Due Date: TBD

For several years- skin biopsies have been a key tool in our breeding decisions. This match is a wonderful example of how those biopsies can be put to work for you. When we choose Kuma to breed to Fly Girl’s dam Maxine, we did so with his fiber traits in mind.

Kuma is incredibly fine with a narrow CV and is among the densest suris biopsied (70 follicles/ sq mm; S/P - 9.1/1; Glands - 3 of 4; Micron spread - 7.6; Medullation - 20%; 2009 MFD - 21; CV - 19.5 ). Maxine has wonderful lock but we wanted to narrow the spread between secondaries and primaries and increase density. Incidentally, Maxine’s density was nothing to be ashamed of at 51.25 follicles/ sq mm.

The two produced Fly Girl and she did not disappoint-- her fiber came out just as we had hoped: fine, consistent and slick. Her locks are independent and luster is high. This is on a correct upright frame. We had planned to put Fly Girl on our show string but a bout with pink eye last summer left her with a white scar on her eye, which we were afraid would be mistaken for a cataract. After our vet told us that any judge would be able to differentiate a scar from a cataract we decided to take her to Nationals.

The results? Fly girl came in first in her class of dark brown juvenile females and went on to win Brown Color Champion. An impressive feat for a juvie, especially when you consider that the Reserve Champion was from one of the best known farms in the country. The judge commented on her luster and fineness, as well as consistency of lock and confirmation. Like all of our maidens, Fly Girl comes with her first breeding free as well as a free skin biopsy from Dr. Norm Evans when she is a minimum of 18 months of age. We would suggest Bronze Mahogany to capitalize on her fiber. Bronze is also among the top tested and has a great pedigree and show record, as well. His biopsy stats are below:

Suggested Service Sire - Bronze Mahogany’s Skin Biopsy:

Density-75 follicles/sq mm
S/P Ratio-11 to 1
Level 3 of 4 Glands
