At Dos Doñas, we are very fortunate to be able to work closely with Dr. Norman Evans, who is one of the top camelid vets in the country with over 18 years of experience. Camelids command 95% of his practice time and alpacas are presently 75% of that practice. His chief interest lies in camelid nutrition and reproduction. In addition to formulating llama and alpaca supplements, Dr. Evans consults with owners and veterinarians on nutritional analysis, blood profiles, problem breeders and field problems. He has published the Veterinary Alpaca Field Manual, which is available through Abel Publishing or through us for $80.00 plus shipping. PLease send us an email if you would like to order a copy. We gave a copy to our local vet, we always give a copy to our buyers, we keep a copy at the house and a copy in the barn!

We first began working with Norm when we decided to begin hosting veterinary seminars for other local breeders. He has spoken to breeders and veterinarians at several events hosted by the farm. Since most veterinarians have no alpaca experience, like so many other breeders, we turned to Norm to help educate us and our local vet.

He visits the farm every few months to ultrasound our females, so we do not have to rely on less effective methods of pregnancy diagnosis. He has also been instrumental in helping us fine tune our nutrition program through the use of baseline blood profiles and forage testing. Over the years, he has helped us become far more sophisticated in our practices and has taught us how to fine-tune productivity on the farm.

Dr. Evans formulates feed for several major companies. A few products are available online. In addition to our professionally formulated feed, we use Alpaca Blend 'E' Vitamin/Mineral mix and Fiber Nutrients. We receive no compensation for our endorsement- we highlight it because we believe in it. We have appreciated great improvements in the overall health of our herd and have seen a dramatic difference in the quality of our fleeces, which we directly attribute to our religious use of his feed products. We have seen the difference it has made in our own herd and we would like to see all alpacas benefit from this.
